There is evidence of growing this variety in Rioja for centuries, but now occupies only 3% of the area of the Denomination. It is more productive than others, particularly sensitive to powdery mildew and requires greater heat summation for maturing red varieties. Although short in aromas, it produces wines with abundant tannins, high acidity and stable color, all of which makes it a good complement to the Tempranillo for wines of long aging.
