Carignan is a wine with designation of origin, produced in the province of Zaragoza. Its production area was established in 1933 and has at its center the town of Cariñera. It is the oldest of Aragon and one of the oldest in Spain. It is 50 kilometers from Zaragoza, south of the Ebro River in the so-called Campo de Cariñera, a name that also receives the region where it is located, bordered on the south by the Sierra Virgin and west with wine region Calatayud.
This is an area with long wine tradition that flourished under the protection of the monasteries during the Middle Ages, but where already some kind of (probably mead) alcoholic beverage in the third century was made.
The land starts from 400 meters above sea level and rises to the south reaching altitudes of 800 meters.
The climate is continental with large temperature variations not only between the summer (which can reach up to 40 ° C) and winter (minimum temperatures of -5 ° C to -8 ° C) but also between day and night. Another climatic factor characteristic of the area is the north wind, wind blowing cold and dry north.
